Five-Star 2027 PG Reese Alston Cuts Recruitment to Seven Schools

One of the premier point guards in the 2027 class is officially narrowing his focus.

Five-star guard Reese Alston announced a final seven of Kentucky, Houston, Louisville, Tennessee, Wichita State, LSU and Vanderbilt, trimming a recruitment that at one point featured more than 35 scholarship offers.

His junior season only strengthened that status. Alston averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game while helping Second Baptist win its second consecutive TAPPS Class 5A state championship. He also earned MaxPreps Junior All-American First Team honors.

Alston brings speed, creativity and legitimate scoring ability to the point guard position. He is dangerous in transition, can create separation with his handle and has the ability to both finish possessions himself and generate opportunities for teammates. His combination of production and playmaking has made him a priority for programs across the country.

Basketball is also in the family. Alston is the son of former NBA guard and streetball icon Rafer "Skip 2 My Lou" Alston, who played 11 NBA seasons and became one of the most recognizable guards of the AND1 era.

With seven schools remaining, here is where Alston's recruitment currently stands.

Kentucky

Kentucky has emerged as one of the programs generating the most momentum with Alston.

Mark Pope and his staff have made the Houston guard a major priority, with assistant coach Mikhail McLean particularly involved in the recruitment. There is an interesting connection between the two: McLean attended Second Baptist, the same school where Alston has developed into a five-star prospect.

Alston visited Lexington for Big Blue Madness in October 2025, and Kentucky's pursuit has continued to increase since then. Pope and McLean both watched Alston during the summer at a Puma event in Texas, another indication of how seriously the Wildcats are treating his recruitment. 

There is another unique connection at play. Pope and Rafer Alston were briefly teammates in the NBA, giving Kentucky's head coach an existing relationship with the family that predates Reese's recruitment.

Kentucky already has five-star wing Ryan Hampton committed in the 2027 class, and adding Alston would give Pope another centerpiece to build around. At this stage, the Wildcats appear to be firmly in the top tier of his recruitment.

Louisville

If Kentucky is one of the schools with the most momentum, Louisville might be its biggest competition.

Pat Kelsey and his staff have treated Alston like a priority throughout the process. Alston has already been to Louisville's campus, and Kelsey's staff also conducted an in-home visit with him in April. Louisville has maintained consistent communication and has built familiarity within Alston's circle.

That work has resulted in legitimate buzz.

Louisville's pitch revolves around Kelsey's aggressive style, player development and the opportunity for Alston to become a featured lead guard. The Cardinals have recruited him consistently enough that they have positioned themselves as a program that could be difficult to beat.

There is still plenty of recruiting left, but a Kentucky-Louisville battle is beginning to look like one of the major storylines to follow.

Houston

The hometown program shouldn't be overlooked.

Houston has been recruiting Alston since his sophomore year and has established one of the longest-standing relationships among his finalists. Alston has previously spoken highly of Kelvin Sampson, Houston's culture and the vision the Cougars have presented for him as a point guard. 

The pitch is straightforward: come in and run the team.

Alston has said Sampson likes what he brings offensively and has discussed putting the ball in his hands early while developing him on the defensive end. That could be particularly attractive considering Houston's track record of developing tough, productive guards and competing deep into March.

There is also the obvious advantage of proximity. Alston already plays his high school basketball in Houston, and his father has deep ties to the city's basketball community after also spending part of his NBA career with the Houston Rockets.

The Cougars have been involved for too long and have too strong of a relationship to be dismissed.

Wichita State

Wichita State is arguably the most interesting program in Alston's final seven.

On paper, the Shockers don't carry the same national recruiting profile as Kentucky, Louisville or Houston. But their relationship with Alston runs deeper than a logo.

Assistant coach P.J. Couisnard has extensive connections to the Houston basketball scene, and Alston plays his grassroots basketball for Cooz Elite, the Houston-based program Couisnard founded. That relationship has helped Wichita State become a legitimate factor in a recruitment featuring some of the biggest programs in college basketball.

Alston first visited Wichita State in October 2025 before returning in March 2026 for a game against Florida Atlantic. He saw Koch Arena with more than 8,000 fans in attendance as the Shockers picked up an 88-70 win.

The fact that Wichita State survived a cut that eliminated programs such as Kansas, Purdue, Texas and USC says plenty about the strength of the relationship.

The Shockers shouldn't be viewed as simply the surprise name in the final seven. They have invested significant time in Alston and have built the type of personal connection capable of keeping them involved deep into the process.

LSU

LSU is another program that has generated legitimate buzz with Alston.

The Tigers have been consistently connected to the five-star guard as his recruitment has progressed, and recent recruiting chatter has placed LSU alongside Kentucky, Louisville and Wichita State among the programs making a serious push.

There was even speculation earlier in the summer about Alston potentially reclassifying, with LSU mentioned as a school that could have benefited from an earlier arrival. More recent reporting, however, has pointed toward Alston remaining in the 2027 class.

LSU hasn't received quite the same public attention as Kentucky and Louisville in this recruitment, but making the final seven confirms the Tigers remain firmly involved.

Tennessee

Tennessee appears to be one of the programs making a late charge.

The Volunteers have increasingly become a factor in Alston's recruitment, with reporting around his list cut indicating Tennessee has made a strong push in recent weeks.

Rick Barnes' program can sell Alston on SEC competition, player development and a consistent winning environment. Tennessee has built its identity around defense and toughness, and a dynamic creator like Alston would give the Volunteers the type of lead guard capable of adding another dimension offensively.

Compared with some of the programs that have recruited Alston for a longer period, Tennessee may have some ground to make up, but surviving the cut shows the Volunteers have gotten his attention.

Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt is one of the newer names to gain traction in Alston's recruitment.

The Commodores entered the picture later than several of the other finalists, with reports this summer identifying Vanderbilt among the schools that had recently become involved.

That makes their inclusion in the final seven notable. Vanderbilt had less time than schools such as Houston, Louisville and Wichita State to establish its relationship, yet still did enough to remain in contention when Alston eliminated dozens of other programs.

The next step will be getting Alston to campus and showing him exactly how he would fit into the program.

Where the Recruitment Stands

There is still work to be done before Alston makes his college decision.

He told Rivals following his list cut that he is in the process of scheduling additional visits, meaning the next round of trips should provide considerably more clarity. 

Right now, Kentucky and Louisville appear to have generated the strongest public buzz, but calling this recruitment a two-team race would be premature. Houston has a longstanding relationship and the hometown advantage. Wichita State has one of the most personal connections in the recruitment. LSU has been consistently involved, while Tennessee is making a push and Vanderbilt has quickly worked its way into serious consideration.

Alston has previously described himself as a lead guard who takes pride in getting teammates involved, playing in transition and, above everything else, winning. His recruitment will ultimately come down to which program can convince him it provides the best combination of opportunity, development and fit.

With his list now down to seven, that picture should become much clearer over the next several months.

For now, Kentucky, Houston, Louisville, Tennessee, Wichita State, LSU and Vanderbilt are the seven programs still standing for one of the premier point guards in the 2027 class.
