2028 Five-Star Erick Dampier Jr. Sees Recruitment Take Off as Contact Period Opens

June 15 marked a major milestone for the Class of 2028 as the NCAA contact period officially opened, allowing college coaches to directly communicate with rising sophomores for the first time. One of the biggest beneficiaries of that opening day was five-star center Erick Dampier Jr., who immediately saw his recruitment reach another level.

The 6-foot-10 standout from Madison-Ridgeland Academy (MS) picked up scholarship offers from Kentucky, USC, Alabama, and Florida State as programs across the country made their intentions clear. Already considered one of the premier prospects in the 2028 class, Dampier's recruitment is quickly developing into one of the most closely watched battles in the country. 

The son of former Mississippi State star and longtime NBA veteran Erick Dampier Sr., Dampier Jr. has been on the national radar for years. His physical tools and production have helped him establish himself as one of the most dominant young big men in grassroots basketball.

Before the contact period officially opened, several schools had already begun building relationships with Dampier. Purdue, Mississippi State, and San Diego were among the early programs involved in his recruitment, while Kentucky coaches had been evaluating him extensively throughout the spring EYBL circuit.

Kentucky's offer may be one of the most significant developments so far. Mark Pope and his staff have tracked Dampier closely, and the Wildcats wasted little time extending an offer once direct contact became permissible. Kentucky sees Dampier as a potential cornerstone piece in a future recruiting class, and the program's championship pedigree is expected to make the Wildcats a serious contender moving forward.

Alabama has also emerged as a major player. The Crimson Tide offered just days before the contact period opened and have positioned themselves early in the race. Florida State joined the mix on June 15, while USC quickly became another high-major program looking to establish a foothold in his recruitment.

What makes Dampier such an attractive prospect is his impact on both ends of the floor. He has shown the ability to finish above the rim, protect the basket at a high level, rebound in traffic, and make plays as a passer. During EYBL competition this spring, he consistently produced against elite competition while displaying the physicality and maturity that college coaches covet in young frontcourt prospects.

The recruitment is still in its earliest stages, and Dampier has emphasized that finding the right fit will be more important than rushing into a decision. He has spoken publicly about wanting a program that feels like home, values chemistry, and gives him the best opportunity to compete for championships at the highest level.

With direct communication now underway and blue-blood programs beginning to enter the picture, the race for Erick Dampier Jr. is only getting started. Kentucky, Alabama, Florida State, and USC landed early blows when the contact period opened, but expect many more national powers to join the pursuit in the coming months.
